Three days at Bisley

There were three days of muzzle loading shooting at Bisley (UK) over the weekend of 13-15 May.

Members of the Long Range Rifles (LRR) Branch of the MLAGB gathered on Friday for a 500 yard practice shoot in the morning, followed by competition for the Volunteer Trophy fired at 600 yards with military match rifles in the afternoon. The Volunteer Trophy offers members chance to shoot military match rifles with open sights. These rifles generally have the same external appearance as the Enfield rifle, but rather than its .577 bore are generally .451 cal. Some members elect to shoot this competition with their Enfield rifles.

Shooting at 900 yards for the B .Custance-Baker Cup

Saturday saw competition for the LRR 900 yard Championship, the B. Custance-Baker Cup. This is for match rifles and those used generally are of the later form with pistol grip stocks, heavy match barrel and aperture sights. There’s a mix of rifles used, and besides the ubiquitous Pedersoli Gibbs, there were a good number of custom built rifles and original match rifles. The day shooting concluded with 1000 yard practice in the afternoon.

1000 yard firing point

The weekend concluded with the MLAGBs National 500 yard Rifle Championship. There are two competitions, one for the muzzle loading Enfield rifle and another for match rifle.

The conditions throughout made for tricky shooting, with wind direction and strength changing on a regular basis, and light varying from slightly overcast, to sunshine (with strong mirage) and sunshine / cloud patterns.

All in all a fine weekend of shooting, with some exceptionally good scores for the conditions (not by the author).
