The 3rd annual Dick Hoff Memorial Black Powder Rifle Match was held 9-10 July 2016, at the Miami Rifle and Pistol Club (MRPC), located east of Cincinnati, Ohio. This match is held each year in memory of our great friend and black powder shooter, Dick Hoff. Both muzzle loading and cartridge rifles are welcomed, with separate award categories for both. In addition to the awards presented for the first 3 competitors in each class, the names of the winners are inscribed on a permanent plaque in the MRPC clubhouse.
While attendance was reduced from previous years, the weather couldn’t have been any better, with highs in the low 80’s and low humidity. There were four cartridge and six muzzle loading shooters competing at 300, 500, and 600 yards. The 300 and 500 yard segments were held on Saturday, followed by a picnic dinner. Bob Boswell smoked some fantastic pulled pork for the main course, with many other dishes provided by Cindy Heismann, Gretchen Hoff, and Jean Munch. With all of the great food and drink provided, no one went home hungry.
The 600 yard segment was completed on Sunday morning, Followed by the awards ceremony (complete with more left-overs from the Saturday picnic then we could eat). We were honored this year, as in the previous 2 years to have several members of Dick’s family attend both the picnic and awards ceremonies, with Dick’s wife Gretchen, passing out the awards. Everyone enjoyed having the opportunity to spend time remembering Dick with his friends and family.
In the past two matches both the cartridge and muzzle loading categories were fittingly won by two of Dick’s dear lifelong friends, Kenn Heismann and Bob Boswell. However, that spell was partially broken with Bob Boswell retaining the cartridge title, but with Ray Hopkins winning in the muzzle loading category. The results for all of the competitors are listed in the following table.
